The Float

I was somewhat nervous, but after a few minutes of seeing different ones, it became so much fun I forgot all about being nervous

The Friday parade was fantastic! Anyone who missed joining us missed a lot. I had the feeling of pride and sense of accomp- lishment from everyone who was involved with getting the float ready. They deserve it. I thought they were the best workcrew I could have asked for. Putting the green and white streamers on the float and its goal posts really brought back memories of school days and I think I enjoyed it this time even more than I did back then. Seeing the float with Skip's beautiful red Chevy pulling it and streamers flowing, old letter jackets and many familiar faces was truly a step back in time that will not be forgotten. The flat tire on the trailer, Dan Ed and Tommy rushing in the emergency air bottle to not quite, but close, fill it with air, waving at friends, surrounded by even closer friends on the float, the constant smell of burning clutch plates, the billowing smoke, the frantic search for a parking spot at the now-full Dairy Mart and the mad dash back to the church remind me of my first roller coaster ride: not knowing what's coming next, loving every minute of it and wanting to do it all again!!!! I really think Skippy planned it that way. If so, Skip, do it again. My only regret of it all was that Skip had sacrificed his clutch to pull a ten ton float that I told him would be no more than five tons. Skip was a great sport about it all (I think he enjoyed the whole affair as much as the rest of us). Thanks, Skip!

In 1997, if you can at all, come for the parade. About forty of us waved at most of Waxahachie from a float that appeared to be on fire with rock music playing as loud as we could get it. Who, but the Class of '62, could win second place for its float without even finishing the parade?
