Decorating the Float
Nancy England
As I drove into the Presbyterian Church parking lot, I remembered Larry Stoffregen's words at the last committee meeting, ”I'll have the float ready except for the streamers. That's all we'll have to do - decorate the sides of the float and wrap the goal posts.” Before me stood a cotton trailer with two goal posts and one sign. Sure, Larry!
Fortunately, a large crew arrived to help decorate. Everyone grabbed a brush, a can of paint and a beer and started painting. Skippy Noel, Larry Stoffregen and Tommy Almand became the directors of the orchestrated effort to win #1 with our float. The guys drilled and manned screw drivers to put the remaining signs in place. The girls splashed paint on the ground, the trailer and even the signs.
After two or three hours of sharing stories about our current lives, laughing about stories of our high school days and sharing the fun at hand, we had a float ready for the parade on Friday.
Our theme of ”Eternal Youth” certainly fit our group that night. We all became 17 years old again!!

My first thoughts of the float were terrifying. What do you design that can represent the class, be easily built and let us all participate? It's been years since I've had to draw any- thing and yet a bunch of people were counting on me. I came up with a basic idea and the big problem was to make it happen. Like most of us, I put it off for all the various multitude of reasons we, as adults, have..no time, teenagers, work - always something else that was of higher priority. I then realized that time was short and a lot had to be done. Then, something as special as the planning meetings occurred, Skip Noel and Tomrny Almand came to my rescue These two guys volunteered time, material and, above all, friendship and we were able to pull it all off - with a little help from about twenty other classmates the night before the parade! Here were two guys still living in Waxahachie and we had not done anything together since high school days. They came to my rescue, not only with help, but - above all - many, many stories, jokes, career highs and lows, kids and Jimmy Reed tapes. I wouldn't trade a minute of it!
The Thursday night before the parade was the first of the home- coming feelings as new and far away faces showed up to put the float in order. We all met behind the Central Presbyterian Church to complete the project. There were still tons of details to finish, but everyone pitched in with work, laughter and a great time. It worked!!! There was plenty of time to talk and reminisce. The first rehearsal of the skit was a memorable event, to say the least. The skit was excellently written, funny and appropriate. The execution was just a little shaky that's all.

Do you people know how fortunate we are to have Larry Stoffregen in our class? He knocked himself out on the float and even took a week's vacation to finish it. He has so many talents in addition to his art skills. He is an effective leader (master of ceremonies), a talented writer and, most of all a compassionate, funny and dependable friend. He's still good looking, too!
