The Dance
Cherry Browning
The dance was successful on two levels - it was great fun and profitable. Before the dance, your committee was very concerned about paying the band. The generous contributions from many individuals on Friday night and the money taken in at the door on Saturday night erased all of the red ink.
The ballroom resembled the fifties and sixties - Janet missed a mirror ball - and the band sounded like the fifties and sixties. Phil Lerway liked Danny and the Dinosaurs so much that he sang with then -- on stage. He must have liked his award from the night before, because he wore a name tag with his name spelled FIL LERWAUGH all evening. We all wanted to take dance lessons from Jan Armstrong or find out what she is taking or eating for all that energy!

The dance was our last chance to socialize and be together. The band was good, but loud. Next time, it will just be Phil Lerway lip-synching some old Pat Boone songs. The decorations were great, thanks to Skip's sister, and additional friends from the Class of '57 were great to see. Strange how badly they've aged and how remarkably well-preserved we all were. Thanks to the hospitality suite that Janet (no, you couldn't smoke inside) and Rob provided, there was a quiet place to meet and discuss the meaning of Phil's hidden singing talents. I wonder if he's ever done that in the courtroom? The sadness that we all felt as a group for Delores Birdsong Sanders and her family can only be understood by those of us of ”Family '62.” [Editorial note: Delores' daughter was murdered in Dallas on Friday, October 2, 1992.]
